What does a Lisbon destination wedding cost?

Plan on €24,500 to €44,000 all in for around 70 guests, and €28,000 to €50,000 at 80. Lisbon and Sintra are the most expensive wedding region in Portugal — 12 to 20 percent above the Algarve and 25 to 33 percent above the Douro at every guest count.

The spread inside that band is not noise. It is the difference between a Tuesday in March at a walled courtyard in the city and a Saturday in July at an estate in Sintra. Guest count, season, and venue type move the total by tens of thousands of euros, and they move it before you have chosen a single supplier.

Is Lisbon cheaper than getting married in the United States?

Not per guest. The average American wedding runs $34,000 for 117 guests, about $292 a head. Lisbon works out closer to $410 to $740 a head. What Lisbon lowers is the guest list, not the price of feeding it — and that is where the saving actually comes from.

The Knot's own figures make the point. Couples who married abroad in 2025 spent an average of $41,000, against $32,000 for a hometown wedding. An international wedding is not the budget option; it is a different trade. You are paying more per person to host fewer people for longer, in a place they will remember.

It is worth deciding which of those you actually want before you price anything, because a 120-guest Lisbon wedding is a genuinely expensive proposition — €45,000 to €85,000 — while a 40-guest one is not.

What does venue hire cost in Lisbon?

Three tiers, and they barely overlap. An urban courtyard in the city runs €3,000 to €6,000. A quinta or estate outside it runs €5,500 to €10,000. A historic palace starts around €8,000 and runs past €25,000 at the top of the market.

Most Lisbon-area venues sit 20 to 30 minutes from Humberto Delgado airport. For guests flying in from the United States that matters more than it sounds — it is the difference between landing and arriving, and it is the clearest practical argument for Lisbon over the Algarve or the Douro.

What do catering and drinks cost?

Budget €120 to €200 per head for catering with drinks included. Bare catering quotes start lower, near €70 to €150, but a quote without the bar is not a number you can plan against. Ask every venue which of the two they are quoting.

Photography runs €2,200 to €5,500 for full-day coverage. A full-service planner runs €3,000 to €12,000; day-of coordination alone runs €800 to €1,500. A DJ is €1,200 to €2,500, and a fado singer for the cocktail hour is €800 to €2,000 — the one line on this list that only Lisbon can sell you.

What do the all-inclusive packages actually include?

Lisbon planners publish real package prices, and they range widely: about €13,000 for 50 guests at a quinta, €19,900 at a coastal fort, €36,000 at a royal palace. Each covers venue, catering, bar, flowers, day-of coordination, and sound.

Two things those headline prices leave out, and both are large. VAT at 23 percent is quoted separately, so a €13,000 package is closer to €16,000 delivered. And the packages exclude photography, video, hair and makeup, transport, and every cost attached to getting you and your guests there.

That is not a criticism of the packages — it is how the market quotes. But it means a package price and an all-in budget are different numbers, and comparing one venue's package against another's all-in figure will mislead you every time.

How much does the season change the number?

Peak season runs May through October, and a peak-season Saturday costs 20 to 30 percent more than a shoulder-season date or a weekday. On a €35,000 wedding that is €7,000 to €10,500 — more than most couples save anywhere else in the budget.

One coastal Lisbon venue publishes both figures openly: the same package is about 20 percent higher in high season than in low. Moving a wedding from a July Saturday to a late-September Friday is the single largest lever an American couple has, and it costs nothing but a conversation with your guests.

What does an American couple need to marry legally in Portugal?

Four things: an affidavit of eligibility to marry from the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, apostilled copies of your state-issued documents, certified Portuguese translations, and an application to the Conservatória do Registo Civil in the district where you will marry.

Allow three to four months minimum from starting the paperwork to the ceremony, and plan to be in Portugal several days beforehand rather than flying in the day before. The United States does not issue a certificate of no impediment in the way some countries do, so the embassy affidavit is the accepted substitute — and each document generally has to have been issued within six months of the wedding date.

If that timeline does not work, the common alternative is to marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Lisbon, which carries no Portuguese formalities at all. Confirm the current requirements with the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon before you book anything — this is the one part of the budget where a missed step costs you the date.

What do couples forget to budget for?
